Product description

Atmospheric pastel, view of Lake Constance by the Neumünster S-H-based lawyer and notary Karl Georg Barlach (1878-1968). Dimensions: 46 x 64 cm, the work is in good original condition. Titled and signed on the verso. B was active in Schleswig Holstein, Hamburg, southern Germany and abroad, including South Africa. The Bock art salon from Hamburg showed mostly pictures of the Lower Elbe at an exhibition in 1914. He also wrote novels and short stories, which he did not publish.

Together with his cousin Ernst Barlach and his brothers, B. spent several summer holidays at his parents' house in Neumünster. This led to a close friendship from 1914 onwards. B collected a total of 126 letters written by his cousin between January 1914 and May 1938 and which were included in the complete edition of Ernst Barlach's poetic works.

After Ernst Barlach's death in 1938, Karl Barlach founded a “circle of friends” that included, among others, Leo von König, Gerhard Marcks and Hermann Fürchtegott Reemtsma. Karl Barlach took over the chairmanship of this organization, which took care of the works Ernst Barlach left behind and protected them from the National Socialists. In 1960 Barlach's book My Vetter Ernst Barlach was published.

In 1957, the Federal President awarded B. the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon for his services in the cultural sector.
