Friedrich Schaper was a German painter and graphic artist, born on November 13, 1869 in Braunschweig and died on February 21, 1956 in Hamburg. Here is some information about his life and artistic career:

Life:
Friedrich Schaper came to Hamburg with his parents at the age of four.
From 1886 he trained as a decorative painter.
From 1889 he initially studied at the arts and crafts school in Hamburg, but in 1890 he moved to the art academy in Berlin.
At the urging of his mentor Alfred Lichtwark, he returned to Hamburg in 1894.
Artist club and career:
In the spring of 1897, Schaper founded the Hamburg Artists' Club together with seven other young painters.
After a few years as a freelance painter, he began working as a drawing teacher in 1902.
In 1903 he married Camilla Lobenstein and settled in Groß-Borstel in 1921.
Friedrich Schaper was a member of the German Artists' Association and the Hamburg Artists' Association of 1832.
Teaching activities and awards:
From 1925 Schaper worked as a teacher at the state art school.
After the end of the war he was appointed professor in 1949.
The Hamburg Professional Association of Visual Artists awarded him honorary membership in 1949.
In 1951 he became an honorary member of the Hamburg Artists' Association.
Later years and death:
After he was no longer able to paint due to an eye problem, he became an honorary member of the Hamburg Artists' Association in 1951.
Friedrich Schaper died in 1956 in the Groß Borstel district of Hamburg.
Factories:
Friedrich Schaper designed, among other things, the tomb of Novalis in Weißenfels.
Exhibitions:
In 2019, his work was presented in the exhibition “Hamburg School – The 19th Century Rediscovered” at the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
