Adolf Kaufmann (Troppau 1848-1916 Vienna)

The landscape and marine painter Adolf Kaufmann (Troppau district 1848 - 1916 Vienna) was self-taught at the beginning of his career; he later completed his studies with Emile van Marcke de Lummen in Paris.



Kaufmann made numerous trips to Europe and the Orient and lived alternately in Paris, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich. In 1890 he settled in Vienna and founded a women's school, but continued to return to Paris throughout his life. From 1890 to 1913 he was frequently represented at exhibitions in the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Munich Glass Palace. Adolf Kaufmann also traveled to Normandy and Brittany. In France he signed with the pseudonym A. Guyot.



Due to his outstanding talent, Kaufmann soon enjoyed great reputation in Paris. Many art lovers buy his paintings, such as Napoleon III. The years 1879 to 1881 were characterized by a lot of travel. Germany is followed by Russia, Norway, Poland, Holland, France and Belgium. Kaufmann also works at the academies in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich and takes part in numerous exhibitions. After another short stay in Paris, he decided to finally settle in Vienna in 1890.



Adolf Kaufmann became a member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and founded a women's painting school together with Carl Freiherr von Merode and Heinrich Lester. In the following years, Kaufmann took part in major exhibitions at the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Munich Glass Palace. Viennese society also enthusiastically received his works. The journeys that the artist undertook until 1899 took him primarily through the Austro-Hungarian crown lands. His aforementioned success at the Paris World Exhibition as well as many awards and honors also occurred during this time. In 1909 Adolf Kaufmann became a full member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. In 1910 he traveled to Holland and in 1912 to Amsterdam and South Tyrol. The year 1913 took him back to Holland and then to Norway, where his fjord pictures were created. In 1914 he made his last trip to Northern Italy.



Works by Adolf Kaufmann are still represented in numerous collections and museums today; for example, paintings by the artist are owned or owned by: B. the Art Museum of Istanbul, the Troppau Museum, the Grand Ducal Painting Collection of Baden-Baden, the Emperor of Austria, the Ministry of Education in Vienna, Crown Princess Stefanie, Archduke Friedrich, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Queen Isabella II of Spain and the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
