Atmospheric oil painting by the Kiel painter Werner Rieger (1921-2008)
Werner Rieger was a German painter and artist who was born on June 10, 1921 in Plauen in Vogtland and died on February 5, 2008 in Kiel. He originally began studying law in 1939 before serving as a soldier in World War II from 1940 to 1946. After the war, Rieger devoted himself entirely to art and worked as a freelance artist from 1946 onwards. From 1949 to 1951 he attended the art academy in Hamburg, where he deepened his artistic training.
From 1947 to 1956 Rieger lived in Lütjenburg before settling in Kiel in 1956. In addition to his work as a painter, he also worked as a freelance lecturer for orientation knowledge at the Deutsche Bundespost Management Academy for six years. His works were presented in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad from 1956 to 1980. After this active exhibition activity, he concentrated more intensively on painting again.
Rieger has received several awards for his artistic work: in 1954 he received the prize from the Schleswig-Holstein State Cultural Association, and in 1969 he was awarded the prize from the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of Visual Artists. His works and his commitment have left a lasting mark on the German art scene, especially in Schleswig-Holstein, where he worked for many years. His works are represented in public collections, among others. Schleswig-Holstein State Museum and the Schleswig-Holstein Sparkasse Foundation.
