Eduard Steffen was a Czech painter who was born in Prague on March 8, 1839 and died in the same place on March 5, 1893. Here are some important stages in his life:

Early life:
Eduard Steffen was born in Vrchlabi in the family of the shoemaker Johann Steffen and his wife Josefa née Erbenova.
After graduating from elementary school, he went to Prague in the early 1850s to study at the gymnasium.
Because of his artistic talent, he decided to study at the Prague Academy of Painting from 1854 to 1863.
Educator:
Steffen initially taught at a private teacher's institute and, after graduating from the Academy of Painting, from 1863 onwards at the first German Higher State Real School on Mikulandska Street.
In 1864 he won a competition for a vacant position at the Ceska Lipa Higher Secondary School, where he worked as a professor of drawing.
In addition to secondary school, he also taught drawing at the Augustiner-Gymnasium.
During his time in Ceska Lipa, he was involved in various social activities and was a member of the city council, the Association of Volunteer Firefighters and other organizations.
Eduard Steffen died on March 8, 1893 in Ceská Lipa and was buried three days later in the cemetery there.
Work:
Steffen's artistic activity was diverse and included altarpieces for churches in Ceská Lipa and the surrounding area as well as genre portraits, landscapes and urban views.
He regularly took part in art exhibitions in Prague, Dresden, Vienna and Liberec.
After 1890 he visited various places in Swabia, Nuremberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Überlingen to find motifs for his oil and watercolor paintings.
Monument:
After his death, a bust by the sculptor Richard Kauffungen was unveiled in Ceska Lipa City Park on June 3, 1894.
The bust was removed in 1941 during World War II, but was later saved and stored in the local museum.
The city of Ceska Lipa decided to restore the monument and a copy of the original bronze bust was placed in the central part of the city park and was ceremoniously unveiled in June 2020.
Gallery:
Steffen created a variety of paintings including portraits, genre paintings, landscapes and urban views.
Some of his works are exhibited in various Czech museums and galleries, including the National Gallery in Prague and the Museum in Ceska Lipa.
