August Westphalen (1864–1957) is considered an important representative of North German landscape painting. Born in Neumünster, he received his artistic training at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1898, Westphalen was a founding member of the “Berlin Secession” - a progressive artists' association that broke away from the academic understanding of art and broke new ground in plein air painting.
Although he maintained artistic connections in Berlin, Westphalen found his real inspiration in the north. The landscape of Schleswig-Holstein, moors, beaches and village motifs shaped his work, as did atmospheric lighting. His pictures are characterized by finely observed representations of nature, clear compositions and a high sensitivity to seasons and weather moods.
Westphalen was regularly represented at regional and national exhibitions. His works are now in both private collections and public collections. As one of the leading painters in his region, he left behind an extensive oeuvre that is still valued today.
